Ms Umbridge retired early to recover the sanity a few unruly children took from her during her reign as High Inquisitor of Hogwarts. Her past seems distant and unimportant- she was a bright student in Hogwarts, excelling in all subjects except for Care of Magical Creatures, and History of Magic. She started off in the Ministry's Law Enforcement department as an intern, and worked her way through each department until she was rubbing elbows with the top tiers of the Ministry.

After being reassigned to Hogwarts, she took to doing only clerical work and work on the Wizengamot. As the wizarding war worsened, she took a vacation to Romania, returning only after Voldemort was dead- she simply did not want to deal with either side, frankly.

She returned and worked from home for the next twenty or so years. When she heard of Harry Potter's apparent descent into insanity, she struggled between smug pleasure and fear for her own life. Sure enough, he showed up on her doorstep, but with a proposal. He thought the Ministry was ripe for the taking. She came out of retirement. And she took it.
